Well today’s one of those days. A two-hour school delay for my kids was miraculously transformed into a snow day for the entire family by a single inch of snow.
What’s an entrepreneur to do when school is canceled?
Two years ago this would have sent me into a tailspin. I would have been silently cursing our school’s principal, the school district even (gasp) Mother Nature! I’d spend the day trying to be a “good mom” while my laptop beckoned me like an abandoned lover.
Inevitably I’d spend the day stressed and overwhelmed, not enjoying the extra time with my kids.
Today, on our very first snow day of 2015 I realized how far I’ve come… I’m pretty darn happy about this snow day!
I spent an extra hour reading and journaling while the kids slept in. I have a list of tasks I can do to move my business along in between the chunks of time I spend with my little ones. This slow paced Friday feels delicious.
So what’s changed? And what can you do to greet the inescapable school cancellations this year with joy rather than stress?
- Create a “Brain Dead” list – Productivity and prosperity require you to honor the natural ebbs and flows of your personal energy. You will have days that you just can’t produce either because you are exhausted, depleted or your kids have a SNOW DAY. Create a list of tasks you can do with limited brain function. For me that list includes filing, cleaning up my email inbox and listening to podcasts “I’ve been meaning to get to.”
- Get your kids in on the act. This is an extension of the “brain dead” list concept. Make a list of business tasks that you can do with your kids involvement (i.e. filing) or domestic tasks you keep putting off that would make your space feel awesome that your kids can help with (i.e. sorting their toys/stuff and finding items you can donate to clear some space.)
- Time Management. If you don’t currently proactively schedule your big projects (and small tasks) you will be a slave to last minutes changes, interruptions and SNOW DAYS! There are plenty of methods out there you just need to find one that is right for you! I am dedicated to a kick ass time management system I perfected a few years ago.
