Last week Matt Damon spoke four words to me that rocked my world.
Here they are:
from the A-MAZ-ING movie “We Bought a Zoo”
Did you hear that?
20 seconds of courage.*
That is all it takes to do that thing that has felt so hard for so long. I tell clients all the time: “The hardest part is starting. Once you start you’ll be fine.”
Someone is afraid to talk to her husband about his challenging attitude towards her business: “Just start the conversation.”
A woman has an amazing business idea but no business because she is afraid to ask anyone to be a client: “Just start the conversation. Starting is the hardest part.”
A mom needs her needy best friend to give her a little space but is afraid to hurt her feelings: “Just start the conversation.”
But this courage was the missing link that makes all this “Just starting” important. We don’t need courage to go through an entire difficult conversation. We just need 20 seconds of courage. If you can summon 20 seconds of courage the rest is easy.
It’s those first 20 seconds.
Isn’t that beautiful? Doesn’t that make doing that next hard thing mind-blowingly easy? Anyone can do 20 seconds. ANYONE!
And those 20 seconds have the power to transform your life. On the other side of those 20 seconds is a better relationship with your partner, a new client, freedom from a clingy human.
20 Seconds + Courage = Transformation.
Ok, let’s commit to our 20 seconds together right now. Are you ready? GO!
(I’ll report back in next week on what I used my 20 seconds on – what about you?)
