Hallelujah by The Tenors just came on. Oof …it brings back memories. I played this song on repeat all through my mother’s cancer treatments and later when I was grieving her loss. It gave me comfort and a sense of hope when very little could.
If I could travel back in time I would sit with that version of me and tell her some things. She’d probably have a hard time believing me but I’d tell her that even though she still misses her mom, it isn’t raw anymore.
I’d tell her that pain was transmuted into something else… and that she uses it in strange and powerful ways to help others.
I’d describe the beautiful home we live in and how deer and turkeys, crows and rabbits keep her company in the backyard while she drinks her coffee at sunrise. I would tell her that both kids are in college and happy and the part that would make her gasp is that both of them are on the Dean’s list. “Yes, even our son” I’d say smiling as she looked at me in disbelief.
I’d tell her she loves Matt even more than she did back then. And that the job layoff they were so scared about led him into a career he loves.
I would probably leave out the part of navigating a global pandemic (I mean who needs to know about that anyway.)
Then I’d tell her the best part… “Patty, you feel so at home in your skin. And I know that won’t even make sense to you. You won’t even understand how hard you are on yourself right now. But in 2026 it’s so different. And it’s beautiful.”
And when I left her I know she’d wonder if all I shared could really be real, but deep down inside she’d feel it.
Because I am her and she is me.
Right now there is a version of you waiting in the future to tell you YOUR story. Connect with her and let her whisper your future into your waiting soul.
