We are knee deep in snow. My daughter is belting out her 700th rendition of “Let It Go” from the Disney movie, Frozen. Normally this repetitive singing pushes me to the very edge of crazy – but not this song.
I could listen to her sing these words an extra 700 times.
The message is beautiful. It’s one we all need to hear. It’s time to “let it go”.
“It” could be anything – something a person said to you that hurt your feelings, a limitation you’ve put on yourself that is holding you back, a belief about who you “should” be that makes it hard for you to accept who you really are.
In the movie the main character, Elsa, spends her life limited by other people’s expectations of who she should be. She hides her greatest power because it might scare others. As a result, Elsa spends her early life unhappy and cut off from the people that love her.
When an unexpected turn of events causes Elsa to reveal these gifts, her fears are realized when her community rejects her.
She runs away angry and hurt but finds the ultimate gift in accepting who she is – she discovers freedom.
In the end, the people that really count embrace these gifts. And she creates new friends along the way. True friends. As she unleashes her gifts in the world, they create a magic no one could have understood or expected previously.
Like all good Disney movies – this one has a happy ending. I like happy endings. What I like even better, as a mother, is that my daughter is learning that being true to yourself isn’t always easy, but it is beautiful. It’s also the only way to deliver your unique magic to the world.
