My son is going to be graduating in a few days. How did we get here?
I look at him sitting next to me at the dinner table and think “When did you learn to feed yourself?” I feel like yesterday I was still holding the food out for you.
It’s confusing. I am walking through my day and forget he’s old enough to drive. “How did you get to your friend’s house?” I wonder when he texts me he’s arrived.
The part of me that is the mother of a boy who lives with me is dissolving. She metamorphosizing into something different. Into the woman that can live with him out in the world. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like I have any form at all.
I ground myself daily, running imaginary tree trunks deep into the earth, just to be sure I don’t float off. I have never been an overy-sentimental mother. While other mothers posted tear-filled pictures of their kids first day of school, I posted the picture of me grinning wildly – “FREEDOM!” the capture read.
I have no idea how to be in this space. I’m in the middle place. The beginning hasn’t started and the ending hasn’t completed itself yet.
Most of us are in the middle place in some way. The pandemic and isolation started an ending we were barely aware of. Our desires changed. Who we spend time with has changed. What we tolerate has changed.
It’s possible you are as confused as I am in my own middle space. Feeling like you don’t recognize yourself completely or can count on what’s coming next.
I have a secret question that’s been getting me through this time I want to share with you…
“What if it’s even better?”
When we don’t know what’s coming next our brains naturally lean toward the negative but that is rarely true of change. Change births possibility. Even through the tears I ask “What if it’s even better?”
That is what my upcoming event Unleash Your Magic is all about. Shaking off what is tethering you to the past and allowing you to step into the “what is better!”
I’d love for you to join me!
