“What if they blame me for his anxiety, lack of focus and poor self esteem?”
“What if I could have solved this problem myself?”
“What if they judge me?”
As a parent I have had ALL of these thoughts and more when it came to getting the RIGHT support for my son when we were struggling to solve his behavioral outbursts at the age of 4.
As a mental health professional I had this pit in my stomach that I ‘should’ have known exactly what to do to help my son and to this day now having three boys I still have those moments of helplessness. So know you are NOT alone.
To make a really long story short, when my son was about four and started attending school I noticed a drastic shift in his behavior, his energy level and his self esteem. It worried me and I searched high and low for answers. The feedback I received was “he will grow out of it” or better yet “his behavior does not match any ‘diagnosis’ therefore I can not give you a straight answer.”
It wasn’t the ‘label’ I was worried about. All I wanted was my little boy to be happy. I wanted to see the smile on his face again and most of all I wanted him to ENJOY school.
There had to be something out there, a tool he could carry with him and use when he needed.
Then I found it! Children’s Meditation, my saving grace.
When I started I had no idea what I was doing. No idea where to start but I did it. Did some research, took a course and my little boy was back to himself and much more… Stronger, more confidence and as a result I was calmer and more at peace with myself than ever before.
People wanted to know what I was doing, so I told them and started workshops in my home.
Fast forward a few years I am now teaching parents, teachers, coaches and professional counselors from all over the world these same techniques.
Meditation to me isn’t about sitting on a pillow ‘OM-ing’ all day in the corner. It’s about giving your kids very realistic tools to deal with daily stressors and as a results their anxiety and worry begins to minimize, their confidence increase and they feel more empowered having control over their emotions, which of course makes parents happy too 🙂
Of course we still have our days and frustrating moments, but now we know how to deal with them in a positive way. I feel less reactive and more connected as a family.
Failure for me was and is not an option. Happiness is what I’m after.
