As we celebrated Independence Day here in the U.S last week, I contemplated what our Freedom means. Ever since 9/11, certain patriotic holidays tend to bring on discussions about how to protect our Freedom or ensure that we protect the Freedom of people in other countries.
Often times it seems that our Freedom is directly tied to obligation. But isn’t obligation the opposite of Freedom?
And how about us as moms? Are there responsibilities or obligations that come with being a mom with so many Freedoms?
I for one have financial Freedom, my children are healthy, I’m educated (or so the diplomas say) – am I required to pay a price for that Freedom?
I don’t think so. Here is what I do believe:
Our Freedom brings us opportunity. Opportunity infers choice and that feels more in line with Freedom. But first, we truly have to experience Freedom to be able to embrace the opportunity.
As moms we can understand with our brains that we are free, yet feel totally and completely trapped in our hearts. Our thoughts about who we are supposed to be or what we are supposed to do leaves us feeling like our hands our tied. I wrote about this last week.
When we feel trapped, we are less willing to give to anyone, including our children. However, when we discover Freedom to live the life we choose, we are suddenly overwhelmed with a desire to share our bounty with everyone. And our children naturally benefit.
When we feel free, we can’t help but want to give! And that just feels great!
At Mom Gets A Life, one of the opportunities that has come from our financial freedom is the ability to help moms who don’t have the same access to finances. A portion of all our proceeds is loaned to mothers in impoverished nations through the micro lending program, Kiva. You can read about why we lend here.
I’m sure you have a way that you love to give back when you are feeling full up with your own personal freedom. I’d love to hear about it! Please share below!
