When I was moving my daughter out of college a few weeks ago, I met one of her friends for the first time. He “knew what I did” and asked if I’d be willing to do a quick reading for him.
Immediately I saw a big beautiful light around him. It radiated goodness. I described it to him. Then he asked if there was anything important he needed to know.
I gave him what I saw – things like details that would help him make some choices in his career path. His Spirit Team also passed on a message … He had deep deep goodness and he shared those with others. But he gave too much sometimes. They showed me he could see where people were struggling and where he was capable of helping. So he did. Constantly.
I asked him if that sounded familiar. He said yes, and then he said something I wasn’t expecting. He said he felt guilty stepping back because he could see he was more capable than the people around him of handling certain things. So he just… made up the difference.
My Spirit Team dropped in a phrase of direction for him quickly: Capacity does not equal obligation.
I love when they’re that pithy. It makes it easy to remember.
I passed it along and we moved on. But I kept turning that phrase over in my head for days. And somewhere in the turning, I realized it was for me too.
I have done years of work in this area. I know the pattern. I’ve named it, traced it, released it – I created a school to help with it lol. And still, when I got still enough to look, I could feel it running in the background.
So I made a rule for myself. For the next few weeks, unless someone actually asked for help, I wasn’t going to offer it.
What happened next genuinely surprised me. The number of impulses I had in a single day to fix something, smooth something, anticipate something for someone who hadn’t asked was startling. I’m not talking about generosity. I’m talking about a compulsion so well-practiced I had stopped seeing it as a pattern at all. It had just become how I moved through the world.
This past Sunday, I drove three hours to my nephew’s first birthday party. The old me would have offered to arrive early and help set up. I didn’t.
Throughout the party I noticed myself picking up on people’s energy the way I always do – but instead of checking in, asking if they were “really okay,” pulling people slightly closer than the moment called for, I just let it be. (My brother and sister-in-law did ask for a couple of things and I helped, gladly. That part was easy.)
The real breakthrough didn’t land until the drive home. I realized I was relaxed. Actually relaxed. And then I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I’d left a gathering feeling that way. Somewhere I had accepted that social events were just going to cost me something – that I’d leave a little depleted, sometimes a lot. I thought that was just how it was for someone like me.
It wasn’t how it was. It was what I had been doing.
Here’s the part that matters most for you: I had been working on this pattern for years. Not weeks, not months – YEARS. Therapy, energy work, awareness practices. And it shifted in a matter of weeks. Not because I finally found the right technique, but because the input arrived in the right form at the right time and something in me was ready to receive it.
That is the gift available to all of us right now. This year has a quality to it – a readiness – that makes space for the kind of transformation that used to take much longer. Things that have felt stuck, layered, immovable – they are moving. The shedding that once felt like slow and painful work is becoming something else entirely.
I’m watching it happen in myself. I’m watching it happen in the women I work with.
If you have a pattern that has been with you a long time – one you’ve named and worked and released and somehow still find running the show – I want you to know it may be closer to release than you think.
More on that soon.
With love,
Patty
