Five years ago I was growing my business the way most newbies I know grow it–with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake. My soul and my fear had equal power in my business, but I wasn’t sure what I needed to do to give my soul the upper hand. I also wasn’t experienced enough to know that my soul NEEDED the upper hand if I was ever going to be truly successful.
Then I heard a woman speak a few sentences and everything changed. I was at a conference for women entrepreneurs. That woman was on the stage and she was speaking to ME. I could feel every word that left her mouth find my heart and wrap itself around the scared part of me.
I listened in rapt attention. This woman was amazing! Then she said the following words that shook me so hard it changed the entire trajectory of my life and business:
“You need to either sh*t or get off the pot.”
That woman was Nel Merlino and she was talking about the need for women entrepreneurs to play big or go home. She didn’t define what my “big” should be but she told me I knew whether I was playing it or not.
And I wasn’t. I was not playing my “Big.”
Since that day I went on to launch a conference, grow my speaking platform internationally, become a best selling author and help hundreds and hundreds of women.
There are still moments when I can hear Nel’s voice in my head. Urging me to live up to my potential. Nel changed my life and she didn’t even meet me that day.
She is also the reason I believe those that are called to speak should do it in BIG ways. Had Nel not spoken that day I’m not sure what the years that followed might have looked like. I’m pretty sure God would have sent me some other signs to “Sh*t or get off the pot” but would they have been as clear as Nel’s delivery?
Inside you is a message the world needs to hear. If you feel called to the stage, if you feel that speaking is a way you are meant to serve your people, I urge you to make that happen now.
Just start. And if you are already speaking, speak more.
