We are in a time where words matter. What we say has the power to heal or hurt based on the choices we make.
In a world of word gluttony created by social media it can be easy to think we are speaking into the void, but we aren’t. Words have power and someone is reading them. We must choose carefully and with intention.
I don’t mean we need to edit our opinions and we certainly don’t need to hide our truth. BUT we do need to ensure that what we say and type and post is done with consciousness.
Yesterday as news of the Las Vegas shooting spread and the death toll rose, Facebook lit up with posts posturing and politicizing gun control. How did we get here? How did we get to place where, when fellow human beings are wounded and killed, our first reaction is to step upon the platform of their victimhood to forward a “cause”?
I have searched my heart for the answer and what I have come to is that those people feel so angry and helpless that they are desperate for relief. For them relief comes in the form of furthering their cause.
But the problems is that when we process our pain on social media we do harm. We may not mean to do it but we do. We take our pain and pour it into a great vat of social media in the hopes that it disappears, but it doesn’t. It poisons the well everyone is drinking from.
Do I think we have to censor ourselves? Certainly not. But a little discernment could be incredibly valuable right now. And if we can figure out a way to offer love into that big social media vat of words I think we might find a way to help.
