Last week my son left a project to the last minute. In fairness to him, we had a lot going on and he had been sick. As he tried to get started on the project he couldn’t move forward.
The overwhelm had frozen him in place.
Have you ever felt that? I know I have.
As we worked together, I helped him to break the project into bite-sized steps.
At first he resisted those small steps. When you feel like something really big has to happen, taken small steps feels inconsequential to your ego. Your ego wants a GIANT LIFE SIZED step to relieve the feeling of overwhelm.
Watching him, I felt his pain. I had been there many times before. Every client I’ve ever worked with has ended up there at one time or another.
I assured him that it was normal to feel blocked when you feel overwhelmed.
I promised him over and over I knew what I was doing in creating these small steps. He looked at me dubiously but consented to my process because, let’s face it, help is help.
As he moved forward through the small steps and started to see some progress he relaxed. When he finally finished he said, “That was easier than I thought!”
“That’s because you have an awesome coach for a mom!” I screamed in my head. In real life I smiled pleasantly and said “Good job!”
One of the foundations of coaching is being able to help people break down big goals into bite-sized steps. It’s such a simple technique that it feels like we should be able to do it for ourselves, but for most of us that just isn’t realistic.
When a goal feels big or overwhelming one of the first steps I take is to find a coach or consultant to help me. I figured out pretty quickly the time I wasted trying to do it on my own was simply time I spent listening to my ego scream “This is crazy! We
are going to fail! You are a lunatic! Why are you even running a small business!!!”
There is nothing wrong with getting support to help you move forward.
And if you happen to be one of the many, many entrepreneurs who feel overwhelmed or “frozen in place” right now because it’s February and you haven’t made a dent in your 2017 goals, good news! You can get that support at no cost.
I’m hosting a free virtual workshop next week to help you start moving forward again.
